The Ministry of Finance and Danmarks Nationalbank are together responsible for the management of the central-government debt.
Danmarks Nationalbank undertakes the administrative tasks, while the Ministry of Finance is responsible for the central government's borrowing and debt management, including relations with the Folketing (parliament). The overall strategy for the central government's borrowing and debt management is determined at quarterly meetings between the Ministry of Finance and Danmarks Nationalbank.
Danmarks Nationalbank handles ongoing borrowing and the administration of the debt in accordance with the strategy laid down. Borrowing takes place by issuing government securities on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange and by raising loans abroad. Sometimes Danmarks Nationalbank buys back government securities on behalf of the central government in order to adjust the composition of the debt.
As part of the administration of the central-government debt Danmarks Nationalbank publishes information on the central government's borrowing and debt. Furthermore, an annual report on debt management "Statens låntagning og gæld" is published. As from 1998 a full-text English translation is available ("Danish Government Borrowing and Debt"). For previous years "Statens låntagning og gæld" is available in Danish only. The publication describes the development during the past year, as well as any matters of importance to borrowing. |
